Panic

Bad bad news. I was making some final additions to my 101 drawings in Photoshop. At 5 in the morning, yeah, it's not like I sleep much anyway. Then Photoshop crashed upon hitting save, on the second of two pages of my 101. My only copy of said file, no backups. Now the .psd file is presumably corrupted, refuses to open, and all the work on it is kaput. I then spent the next 15 minutes in confused, furious silence, cursing myself in my head about not having any backups when I know PS has crashed like this on me before (on very rare occasions), or not finishing the work earlier, or not fragmenting the file into smaller pages instead of having them on two big ones.
The point is: yes, I feel like a gigantic fool. One who possibly would've spent 10 minutes straight shamelessly screaming at his PC if he had no family to wake up.

I am also aware that this sounds like a big cliché excuse for not having my work done by induction day, and that's only frustrating me even more. Seriously, to hell with the kind of people who lie about this stuff, it's already rage-worthy enough as it is. So I get that this is going to cause disbelief.

oh and needless to say, I just made a backup of page one.

I'm not sure what to do now but wait for the repercussions, and prepare to spend all free time I have the next couple of days re-doing the work. Damn it.

In case it wasn't clear before, I'm pretty damn angry about this.

  1. Don't Panic! This course is no stranger to the inconvenient crash... You'll find your induction week will be mostly tutors and peers telling the first years to SAVE SAVE SAVE! to the point that you look for the save button on sketch pads out of habbit.

Its a shame that you must have lost some great work but as you continue with your thumbnails you'll most likely come up with something better... thus the nature of the thumb-nailing technique. It's not about 101 masterpieces but doing 101 quick things that inspire you to find the 1 (or 3 in this case) perfect thing. Don't try reproducing what is lost just move on and forward :-) You still did the drawings... we'll just never see them... :-P

Oh and... Don't Panic! You'll do great!

  2. Yeah, Sammy is right about that : ) Don't worry! Show everyone whatever you've done so far and don't stress about what you've lost : )

  3. I concur with Sammy, the Summer 101 is not mandatory it's just a tool the University uses to ease you into the workflow of the course. Creating quick sketches (and ignoring 98 of them) as you pick 3 to take on to final designs. There is a lot of throw away after any project it's because you have to rule out ideas before committing to the best at your disposal... From the look of your college blog you seem to be doing that already so I wouldn't worry too much.

While we are on the subject...Try to keep a backup of your work on a separate hard drive and synchronise between the two (an external and internal). Disc drive failures can occur at inopportune moments almost as easy as Photoshop crashes. Just BE AWARE... Even if you backup to a flashdrive... just have it in a couple of places.

Also and this might just be me and this might just be happening for this post (if so apologies) but could you refrain from using disproportionate font sizes. It's a little hard to read what you have typed...

    Anyway onwards and upwards buddy.

  5. Hi Tyler,

I'm a bit concerned about the lack of updates on your blog... drop me an email at pgomm@ucreative.ac.uk and reassure me that all is well, and tell me too if it's not.

See link - your first Online Review - it's an important mini-deadline, so read carefully and let it help you manage your time and your project.
